Storing leftovers and taking lunch to work is a lot easier when you have a plastic container with a lid. However, you do not want your Greek yogurt to taste a bit like the pasta you had the week before. You also do not want to content with the nightmare that is trying to get tomato stains out of the container.
The fact that plasticware does not grow on trees will also make you more conscious of the fact that you should keep them as long as possible. Fortunately, there are some tips that you can use to clean your plastic containers and keep them for as long as you can.
Deodorizing Your Plastic Containers
Taking a bite of a piece of fruit only to realize that it tastes like tuna is not something you want to experience. However, this is very common when you do not know how to properly remove odors from your plastic containers. To do this you will need some dishwashing liquid, distilled white vinegar, hot water, and a microfiber cloth.
To start, you should wash your container as you usually would with the dishwashing liquid, water and cloth. After this, you need to fill the container with the vinegar and allow it to sit for around 5 to 10 minutes. Once this time has elapsed, you need to empty out the vinegar and wash the container again. This process should be repeated until the odor is completely gone.
Cleaning Out Tomato Stains
Before you look any further, it is important to note that you will not be able to remove tomato stains from plastic containers that have been microwaved. This is due to the heat of the microwave baking the tomato sauce and residue into the container. This is one of the reasons why you should look at keeping tomato based foods in a glass container.
If you have not microwaved the container, you should turn to lemon juice or baking soda. Both of these options will help to clean the stain.
If you are going to use lemons, you will need a full lemon and a sunny day. To start, you need to scrape and rinse the remaining food from the container then cut the lemon in half. Rub the flesh side of the lemon on the discolored area of the container and squeeze a bit of the juice over the stain. The juice will need to be worked in with the lemon.
You need to then set the container outside in the sun for approximately 1 hour or until the lemon juice has dried. You can then wash the container as you normally would and the stain should be gone.
If you are going to use baking soda, it is important to note that this can be used for cleaning a lot of different items. All you need to clean your containers is some baking soda, a small bowl, and water. Again, you will need to remove the leftovers and excess sauce from the container.
Once clear, mix the baking soda and water together in the bowl until you have a paste. Using your fingers, you can spread the thick paste on the stained areas of your container. The paste should be allowed to sit for around 15 minutes before you rinse it away with some water. This may need to be repeated a few times until the stain is completely gone.
